...And Especially - (Level IV) Written for the great drummer Ronnie Bedford, this is a high-energy but medium-tempo hard bop swing chart, playable by advanced high school groups and well suited for colleges and pro bands. After the head and a memorable sax soli, there is solo space for drums and bass (the bass solo section, with medium-difficulty changes, can be opened up for any additional or alternate soloist). After the solos, there is a grooving shout chorus that builds to an exciting finish.

Boogie Lady (Level IV) - Dan's arrangement of alto saxophonist and composer Erica VonKleist's super hip and cutting edge tune Boogie Lady adds a nice punch to the angular and chromatic melody. This tune, with an even eighth note groove, is in 3/4 time with a third section in 7/8. It is different and unique with a "creepy vibe", and will surely stand out in any jazz concert program. It requires a real solid bass, piano, guitar, and drummer to lay down the two different 16th note ostinatos, as well as horns who can count! Top trumpet note is a high D . Includes space for open solos. 8 Brass

South Carolina Blue Law (Level III) I often joke about the law that requires a jazz band to play at least one blues tune per concert (in F or Bb), in order for it to officially be a jazz concert. Here's the chart needed to round out a concert. Plenty of room for solos with options for backgrounds. Works at just about any tempo from medium to fast. 8 Brass

(7 Brass) So Many Stars - Alan & Marilyn Bergman’s beautiful lyrics are probably best known through their works for Barbra Streisand. But they have indeed collaborated with numerous composers including Marvin Hamlisch and Michel Legrand. Sergio Mendez, rather surprisingly, joins the collaborators’ list. Starting with Flugel Horn solo over vamp, this poignant Bossa Nova arrangement is a perfect first song for your show, having all the vocalists walk to the stage as the vamp goes on. As performed by vocal quartet “More Than Four.” SATB with Big Band.

(Level IV) Homage to Tavito - Inspired by merengue-jazz virtuoso saxophonist Tavito Vasquez (1928-1995), Homage is rooted on the Dominican merengue genre. It’s written for full big band and Dominican percussion (tambora and güira). The drum set part includes an optional version (with and without the percussion). Characteristic of the genre, it features a sax soli based on a live recording by Vasquez on Pipí Franco’s tune “Arroyito Cristalino.” By unanimous consensus among Dominican jazz connoisseurs, Vásquez is the most significant innovator, a player that masterfully blended the bebop nuances onto the merengue tradition, making it sound like one single style. Homage to Tavito follows the merengue tradition navigating from an older style known as “pambiche” to “merengue derecho.” A great piece to feature an advanced saxophone section along with Caribbean flavors from Dominican Republic. 8 Brass

(Level IV) From Across the Street - Rooted on the folkloric tradition of Dominican Palos or Atabales, this movement is rich on multi-layered patterns and includes lyrics at the beginning of the piece. It offers the possibility for the entire band to sing a simple repetitive phrase while a lead vocalist sings the main tune. The soloists are the soprano sax (on the alto sax 1 chair) and the percussion/drummer. An authentic rendition would require additional percussion instruments including Dominican panderos and atabales, but only the drummer could also perform it. A great closing piece for any concert! 8 Brass

(Level IV) Bachata for Two This movement is written for full big band, including woodwind doubles (Altos on flutes and Bb clarinets; tenors on Bb clarinets; and baritone on bass clarinet). Additionally, the rhythm section includes the bachata rhythm section (bongos, güira, and electric bass). The piece is full of the infectious rhythm played by the rhythm guitar in traditional bachata ensembles but adapted for the big band. It features the tenor sax 1 as a soloist. 8 Brass
