Description About the Composer

(Level IV) The Split is a lyrical, Canadian east coast sounding composition written by Canada's premier tenor saxophonist, Mike Murley. It features bass and tenor saxophone. There is lots of elbowroom for the rhythm section to play loose, a la Elvin Jones, underneath the soloists. This piece is unique in that it doesn't sound like a big band composition but rather as a trio which is complemented by the rest of the band. Tenor 1 doubles on soprano saxophone. The trumpet range is a written high D with higher notes which are optional. This was originally recorded by the Maritime Jazz Orchestra on Who Are You, which featured Kenny Wheeler. (7 Brass, with optional bass trombone, and optional guitar or piano part)
