Bones At The Ready
Composed for and premiered by the 2010 International Trombone Festival Jazz Choir, members ages 20 to 80. A Bb swing blues, playable by as few as four performers or as a larger choir. Everyone gets a piece of the melody at some point. Lead part rises only to Ab above the staff. The provided drum set part is optional. Solo space is provided for each chair; but the chart performs wonderfully even if no one solos, as the stop-times and riffs make for excellent passages on their own. It can easily be opened up for additional soloists, including non-trombone guests. Works as an opener or closer. This composition is dedicated to my older brother, José, who played trombone in high school and was a great example of musical interest, passion, dedication, hard work, and enjoyment.

(Level V)
Composed for and premiered by my ensemble The 804 Jazz Bones at the Tromblow’in Festival 2012 in Virginia. A funk tune in D minor, playable by as few as four performers or as a larger choir. Everyone gets a piece of the melody or bass line at some point of the chart. The lead part doesn’t rise above A above the staff. The provided drum set part is optional. A bass trombonist skilled in mixed meter is required. Solo space is provided for Trombones 2 and 4 (with cues in other parts); but the chart performs wonderfully even if no one solos, as the stop-times and riffs make for excellent passages on their own. It can easily be opened up for additional soloists, including non-trombone guests. Works as an opener or closer. I can provide mp3 tracks of individual parts with click track for personal practice. The title of the work not only compliments my ensemble colleagues but was an impromptu reference to me by another colleague when one day he saw me with a few days’ growth of beard.

Samba do Mar
- (Level III)
Composed for and premiered by the 2010 International Trombone Festival Jazz Choir, members ages 20 to 80. A samba in D minor, playable by as few as four performers or as a larger choir. Everyone gets a piece of the melody at some point. Lead part rises only to G above the staff. The provided drum set part is optional. Solo space is provided for the top two chairs; but the chart performs wonderfully even if no one solos, as the stop-times and riffs make for excellent passages on their own. It can easily be opened up for additional soloists, including non-trombone guests. Works as an opener or closer. The dominant rhythm in this piece is the authentic Brazilian “partido alto” style. This “Samba of the Sea” is dedicated to my wife, Mary, who has brought such happiness and inspiration to my life.

¡Yo Soy Iorican! - (Level III)
Composed for and premiered by my ensemble The 804 Jazz Bones at the Tromblow’in Festival 2012 in Virginia. A 6/8 Afro-Cuban in Eb dominant, playable by as few as four performers or as a larger choir. Everyone gets a piece of the melody or bass line at some point of the chart. The lead part doesn’t rise above G above the staff. The provided drum set part is optional. Solo space is provided for Trombones 1, 2, and 3, plus drums; but the chart performs wonderfully even if no one solos, as the stop-times and riffs make for excellent passages on their own. It can easily be opened up for additional soloists, including non-trombone guests. Works as an opener or closer. I can provide mp3 tracks of individual parts with click track for personal practice. The title of the work means “I am Iorican!” and refers to my heritage. My father was from Puerto Rico, and my mother was from Iowa; so I have created the term “Iorican” to describe this culture!
