The Star Spangled Banner
SSATBB A Cappella, Level III
by Bill 'Orange' Lyons Star Spangled Banner
SATB or SATBB A Cappella
arr. by Yumiko Matsuoka And the Walls Come Tumblin' Down
SATB w/Rhythm Section, Level III
by Gary Fry
(Level III) This a cappella arrangement of the National Anthem has been performed for various professional football and baseball teams. The interesting harmonic twists make it sound more difficult than it is. The arrangement climaxes with a soprano singing on a high G. Although the voicings are altered in a jazz style, this piece is guaranteed to please even the most conservative listener. SSATBB

The national anthem is treated here with solemn but inspirational sound. The rich harmony, without going too far away from the original, builds to a climax with contrapuntal lines that make it interesting for the singers. SATB or SATBB a cappella.

(Level 4) The fall of the Berlin Wall was a wonderfully dramatic example that the light of freedom will prevail. Having toured behind the Iron Curtain with choral groups, I was so moved the day the Wall fell that this piece, a surging, gospel-influenced anthem, came tumbling out. Very difficult, best tackled by a mature, large group and soloists who can improvise in gospel style. SATB w/ Rhythm Guide.

(Level III) The Star-Spangled Banner, Francis Scott Key, arranged by Scott Arcangel. This charts sticks to the traditional melody and phrasing of the US National Anthem, with several meter changes that allow the phrases to breathe. Starting out as a traditional brass chorale with a slight reharmonization, the saxophones join in and alto 2 takes the lead on a gospel-tinged bridge. It closes out with a broad, full-ensemble finale that is sure to bring any audience to its feet. Very playable by jazz ensembles of any level, lead trumpet up to high C above staff. Written for and performed by the West Point Band’s Jazz Knights. (8 Brass)
