(Level IV) New Symptoms embraces two concepts. The first is that of metric modulation. It utilizes pulses of quarter notes, dotted quarter notes, and dotted eighth notes (often in ratios of 4/3). The second is that of the Major 7 ^th chord with an augmented fifth, and its relationship to the harmonic major scale. This is used as a source of tension; its release is found in suspended chords and Lydian major-seventh sounds. The tensions are typically organized in the ensemble passages; the solo sections are easier. There are also altered dominants based on melodic minor scales, and diminished seventh chords with added major sevenths. This should be light and swinging, with clean tones throughout. Drummers skilled in polymetrics and cross rhythms will find this chart especially fun and challenging.

After seeing the Beatles lip-sync Hey Jude on The Ed Sullivan Show, KEVIN BRUNKHORST begged enough to get his first guitar for Christmas at age 9. Later, he took clarinet lessons and played in the school concert band. After high school, he attended the Uiversity of North Texas where he studied jazz guitar with Jack Petersen and earned a Bachelor of Music in Composition in 1987. He then worked for eight years in the music industry. In 2001, went back to the University of North Texas. He spent two years in the famous One O'Clock Lab Band which recorded two of his charts. He also directed the L-5 Electric Guitar Ensemble. Upon earning a Master of Music in Jazz Studies in 2004 from UNT, Kevin was hired by St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia where he teaches jazz guitar, arranging, composition and music technology as well as directing two guitar ensembles.
