(8 Brass) This piece was the winner of the 2007 BMI Foundation Charlie Parker Composition Prize. It has been built on three themes that are announced in the introduction and manipulated throughout the composition. The arch form (intro, A, B, C, piano solo, C, B, A, coda) and tonal arrangement (centricity around D) have been inspired by the string quartets of Bela Bartok. This piece moves through Even 8th, Fast Swing and Latin time feels as well.

Jose Bevia is a graduate of Valencia Conservatory of Music, Berklee College of Music, and Florida State University (DMA in Composition), where he studied with Ladislav Kubik, Marcus Roberts, Ms. Ellen Zwilich, Chen Yi, and Martin Bresnick. He is also a member of New York’s BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, studying with jazz composers Michael Abene and Jim McNeely.
Jose has performed at venues in Europe and U.S.A, including the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, Holland, Merkin Hall in New York, the International Association for Jazz Education Conference in Los Angeles, Jazz at the Lincoln Center in New York, The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, Berklee Performance Center in Boston, and the Anton Dvorak Museum in Prague, Czech Republic.
Jose has taught at Florida State University and he is currently Associate Professor of Music at County College of Music in Randolph, New Jersey. His classical and jazz compositions have been performed in Spain, Czech Republic, and the U.S.A. His works have been commissioned by The Commission Project and the BMI Foundation Charlie Parker Composition Prize. Mr. Bevia is the winner of the 2006 University of West Florida Phillips Jazz Piano Competition, the winner of the 2007 BMI Foundation Charlie Parker Composition Prize, finalist of the 2006 Brussels Jazz Orchestra International Composition Contest, and Honorable Mention at the Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute.
