Bochawa - Bill Chase - Level 5 (4 Brass) Trumpet Combo - (4 Trumpets, Guitar, Organ, Bass, and Drum Set)
The Chase family and Cha-Bil publishing are pleased to publish “Bochawa” from the CHASE library on the anniversary of Bill’s 80th birthday. Special thanks to the UNC Jazz Press for taking on this project.
Editor/Arranger Notes:
“Bochawa” was recorded on the third and final album, “Pure Music.” This album represented a new musical direction for the band with more emphasis on solos and tighter arrangements, and less reliance on vocals to create the band’s unique sound.
Bochawa was written by Bill to feature Jerry Van Blair (nickname “Bo”), Bill (“Cha”) and Wally Yohn (“Wa”). Some of the live performances have beautiful trumpet battles going nearly 10 minutes long between Bill and Jerry. When Jerry left, Jay Sollenberger stepped in to Jerry’s solo role for this song and recorded it along with Joe Morrissey and Jim Oatts in the trumpet section.
The bass drum kicks off the chart with 2 counts on the kick drum at the beginning, then again in measures 3 and 6, setting the tempo for this jazz-rock piece. The editors had decided to keep the arrangement close to the recording. However, the solo sections can be extended if desired.
The solo sections should build with each verse both in dynamics and intensity leading to the rhythmic phrase that closes each section.
The trumpet range is demanding for both the lead and 2nd trumpets. An alternative is to have trumpet 4 do the solo work and keep trumpet 2 fresh for the climax in the later parts of the chart.

Bill Chase rose to prominence in the 1960’s as a forceful and powerful lead player and soloist, and also recognized as a
sophisticated composer-arranger with Maynard Ferguson, Stan Kenton, and most notably, Woody Herman. A native Bostonian,
Chase attended the Berklee School of Music and studied with Herb Pomeroy, Armando Ghitalla, and John Coffee.
Chase went on to lead his own grammy-nominated, 9-piece jazz-rock band “CHASE” in the 1970’s with their first hit single
“Get It On”. CHASE distinguished themselves from the vortex of 1970’s sounds using their unique jazz-rock-with-vocal and brass
sound that Downbeat’s Jim Szantor described as, “tellingly-complex cascading lines; a literal waterfall of trumpet and technique.”
In 2014, CHASE was inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
