(Level III) La Verne City Blues, by Brian Owen, is an excellent blues vehicle for younger band. Intended as a chart for Middle and Junior High School bands, it provides a chance to feature the soloists of the band. A great little march section leads into the solo section where your tenor 1, trumpet 1, and trombone 1 can be featured. A challenging but rewarding shout section follows the solos. Brain Owen is an active composer writing for big band and brass quintet, strings quartets, small ensemble and small groups jazz ensembles of all shape and sizes. His recent compositions can be heard in the film “It A Googleful Life,” the Elliot Deutsch Big Band album “Weeknight Music” and in clubs throughout Los Angeles. Brain has also been commissioned to write several podcast show themes , video games, horn section arrangements, and big band music for middle, Junior High and Senior High schools.
Owen holds an M.M. in Jazz Performance from California State University long Beach and B.A. from Central Washington University. He is a regular member of Los Angeles’ busiest salsa band, Angel Lebron y Su Sabor Latino, the Grammy-nominated Tim Davie’s Big Band and the Elliot Deutsch Big Band. Owen also teaches trumpet with The Harmony Project, bringing music to underserved communities in Los Angeles.
