(Level IV) Free Fall - This engaging original was written for the Cal State Long Beach Concert Jazz Orchestra recording “Great Northern Express” and is set in a straight 8 th feel. Symbolizing a skydiving excursion, the rubato introduction dominated by lushly voiced woodwinds portrays a small plane’s gradual ascent to the perfect jump altitude. The groove kicks in to signify the skydiver’s exit from the aircraft. Animated sax lines and metric changes suggest a mixture of tranquility and excitement. As the music calms toward the end, the parachute has been opened and the final chord represents a perfect landing . 8 Brass
