(Level IV) This tune was inspired by a re-gathering of two of my close friends from high school and was written for the Eastman Jazz Ensemble I. The piece was named the winner of the 1996 Down Beat Student Music Awards Competition in the extended original composition category. Old Friends is a fast piece with an extended form that makes for a great opener or closer. Compositionally, the piece uses a motive of three notes from which the harmonies are also derived. The three-note motive is contrasted with sections of wild two-part counterpoint.  The soloists featured include trumpet, piano, tenor 1, and guitar. 8 Brass

ALAN D. NEVEU is a native of Portland, Maine. He earned a B.M. in saxophone performance from the University of Southern Maine and an M.M. as a Writing Skills major in the Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media Department at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. While at Eastman, he played in and recorded with the Eastman Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Fred Sturm. Alan also recorded and toured Germany with Dr. Ramon Ricker's Eastman based group, Saxology. He currently resides in Rochester and is teaching at the First Bible Baptist Church School of Music in Greece, NY.
