April Song Level:

- “April Song” is a
joyful jazz waltz chart that showcases almost the entire band, either through
small soli sections (saxophones, trombones, muted trumpets) or through
individual solos: bass, piano, alto saxophone, and tenor saxophone. The
song-like melody is very memorable, and the orchestration provides interesting
surprises throughout. Alto saxophones double on flute. “
April Song” won the 2016 National Band Association Jazz Ensemble
Composition Competition, and it has been recorded on the album
Infância, by the Cassio Vianna Jazz
Orchestra (www.cassiovianna.com).

CASSIO VIANNA - is a composer, pianist, arranger, and educator whose work reflects the broad range of musical and cultural influences he has received during his years of training. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Vianna started his music studies in classical music while concurrently developing his skills as a composer and interpreter of popular music and Brazilian jazz. Between 1993 and 1995, Vianna studied under Hungarian teacher Ian Guest, who had a significant impact on Vianna’s decision to pursue a career as a composer. Many of Vianna’s compositions have been recorded both in Brazil and in the U.S. His most recent recordings include the Brazilian jazz instrumental album No Caminho (Teal Creek Music, 2009); Letters to Grace: A Song Cycle (Teal Creek Music, 2011); and most recently, Infância (Teal Creek Music, 2017) by the Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra. Cassio Vianna holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Brazilian Popular Music from Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, a Master of Music degree from Western Oregon University; and a Doctor of Arts degree in Jazz Composition from the University of Northern Colorado.
