(8 Brass) (Level 4) Commisioned by Neil Hansen of Northwest College Powell, Wyoming for the Yellowstone Jazz Camp Staff Band, this high-energy work is in the style of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. The main theme features a small group consisting of trumpet, alto, tenor, and trombone with band accompaniment. The groove alternates between a Latin osstinato and straight ahead. The solo section can be opened up for a number of soloists to play a challenging Coltrane-esque chord progression. Recorded on UNC's Alive XVI.

STEVE WIEST received his undergraduate degree in jazz studies from the University of Southern Mississippi, after which he performed for four years as featured trombonist/composer/arranger with the Maynard Ferguson Band. Upon leaving Maynard, he went on to receive his Master of Music degree from North Texas State University, where he wrote for and played in the One O'Clock Lab Band. Steve has taught at the University of Texas at Arlington and is now Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.
