For the Rise of a New Day (Level: III) Recorded by the UNC Jazz Lab Band I, “For the Rise of a New Day” “For the Rise of a New Day” is a funk chart with surprising harmonic twists. Following the main theme, the arrangement moves into a free-flowing, triplet-based, section in which the melody is played by the basses (bass, bass trombone, and baritone sax). This middle section grows majestically, until it brings back the funky groove for solos. Soloists featured in this chart are the piano and the trombone. The combination of a “pop” feel with rich harmonic nuances and song-like melodic lines makes this chart a creative and pleasing option for young talented bands. “For the Rise of a New Day” won the 2015-2016 Ithaca College Jazz Ensemble Composition Contest, and it was featured at the 2017 JEN’s Young Composer Showcase. This chart has been recorded on the album Infância, by the Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra (www.cassiovianna.com). Trumpets 1 and 2 double on flugelhorns. 8 Brass. .
