Description About the Composer
 


(Level IV) A major two-part composition based on a melody by pianist Mindy Zvacek. Elements of classical chamber music present in introduction, followed by statement of theme one by soprano. Lush, polychordal ensemble background leads into Tenor 1 solo over a medium straight-eighth groove, followed by a dramatic ensemble conclusion to section 1. Section 2 opens with a piano statement of theme 2 at slightly faster tempo. Tenor II featured over contemporary changes, culminated by tenor duo and final ensemble statement. Chart ends with piano alone. Powerful music. Lead alto doubles on soprano and flute (briefly). Recorded on UNC's Alive XII. 10 Brass

I majored in jazz studies at the University of North Texas a few years after Bret Zvacek graduated, and at that time the 1:00 Lab Band library was full of gems he left behind.  This is my personal favorite.  When my own big band built up the right personnel to execute lab band charts this is one of the first ones I picked up to challenge them, and to bring the great symphonic orchestrations into our band sound.
