For the Rise of a New Day (Level: III)
Recorded by the UNC Jazz Lab Band I, “For the Rise of a New Day”
“For the Rise of a New Day” is a funk chart with
surprising harmonic twists. Following the main theme, the arrangement moves
into a free-flowing, triplet-based, section in which the melody is played by
the basses (bass, bass trombone, and baritone sax). This middle section grows
majestically, until it brings back the funky groove for solos. Soloists
featured in this chart are the piano and the trombone. The combination of a
“pop” feel with rich harmonic nuances and song-like melodic lines makes this
chart a creative and pleasing option for young talented bands. “For the Rise of
a New Day” won the 2015-2016 Ithaca College Jazz Ensemble Composition Contest,
and it was featured at the 2017 JEN’s Young Composer Showcase. This chart
has been recorded on the album Infância, by the Cassio Vianna Jazz
Orchestra (www.cassiovianna.com).

CASSIO VIANNA - is a composer, pianist, arranger, and educator whose work reflects the broad range of musical and cultural influences he has received during his years of training. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Vianna started his music studies in classical music while concurrently developing his skills as a composer and interpreter of popular music and Brazilian jazz. Between 1993 and 1995, Vianna studied under Hungarian teacher Ian Guest, who had a significant impact on Vianna’s decision to pursue a career as a composer. Many of Vianna’s compositions have been recorded both in Brazil and in the U.S. His most recent recordings include the Brazilian jazz instrumental album No Caminho (Teal Creek Music, 2009); Letters to Grace: A Song Cycle (Teal Creek Music, 2011); and most recently, Infância (Teal Creek Music, 2017) by the Cassio Vianna Jazz Orchestra. Cassio Vianna holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Brazilian Popular Music from Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, a Master of Music degree from Western Oregon University; and a Doctor of Arts degree in Jazz Composition from the University of Northern Colorado.
