(Level IV) This fresh and imaginative mixed meter (3/4+4/4) exploration of the Herbie Hancock classic Chameleon creates a dynamic musical landscape. The piece also makes significant use of quartal harmony, angular lines, and creative orchestration, in order to deepen the heavily syncopated funk groove. Alto 1, 2 and Tenor 1 double on flute. BRYAN HOOTEN, a jazz trombonist and composer/arranger has performed throughout the southeast both as a freelance musician and leader of his own groups. His works for large jazz ensemble have been performed by the Virginia Commonwealth University Jazz Orchestra I and the University of Southern Mississippi Jazz Lab I including a performance at the University of North Texas Jazz Festival. He has written for such jazz luminaries as Seamus Blake, Scott Colley and Rex Richardson. He earned a bachelor's degree in jazz studies that the University of Southern Mississippi and a master's degree in jazz performance from Virginia Commonwealth University.
