(Level IV) Free Fall - This
engaging original was written for the Cal State Long Beach Concert Jazz
Orchestra recording “Great Northern Express” and is set in a straight 8
th
feel. Symbolizing a skydiving excursion, the rubato introduction dominated by
lushly voiced woodwinds portrays a small plane’s gradual ascent to the perfect
jump altitude. The groove kicks in to signify the skydiver’s exit from the
aircraft. Animated sax lines and metric changes suggest a mixture of tranquility
and excitement. As the music calms toward the end, the parachute has been
opened and the final chord represents a perfect landing
.

Jeff Jarvis serves as Director of Jazz Studies at the Bob Cole
Conservatory at California State University Long Beach, and is President of the
California Alliance for Jazz. He maintains an ambitious international itinerary
as an S.E. Shires trumpet artist, honors jazz band conductor, and clinician.
Jeff’s early career as a studio trumpeter encompasses over 100 recordings for
such names as Lou Rawls, Michael Jackson, Melba Moore, and The O’Jays, followed
by numerous solo recordings. Live performance credits include Dizzy Gillespie,
Louie Bellson, Joe Williams, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Henry Mancini, Slide
Hampton, Grady Tate, Rob McConnell, and Doc Severinsen. Jeff is frequently
commissioned to compose music for school, military and professional musical
groups. He has over 150 big band works published and has co-authored The Jazz Educators Handbook with Doug
Beach, a jazz piano book with Matt Harris entitled The Chord Voicing Handbook, and with Mike Carubia, Effective Etudes For Jazz, Volumes 1 & 2.
