JAVIER ARAU is active as a composer and saxophonist in New York City where he leads the Javier Arau Jazz Orchestra and freelances in other small and large ensembles. A former student of Bob Brookmeyer and Ken Schaphorst, he is a four-time recipient of Down Beat Magazine's Student Music Awards including composing, arranging and perfomring honors. He has also received ASCAP's young Jazz Composer Award and has been recognized by MENC, MTNA and IAJE. Javier has composed for genres including jazz big band, jazz choir, chamber jazz, symphony orchestra, electronica, dub/hip-hop, film/radio, musical theater and children's music. He has received commissions and performances of his works from schools around the country and has had his music performed at the Monterey, Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals among others. As an educator, Javier has taught at Lawrence University and has served as a guest clinician with school and university programs around the country.
