Description About the Composer

(Level V) Romeo / Paris - An original composition inspired by the wedding of Romeo and Juliet (part of the University of Northern Colorado's Romeo and Juliet Project). Romeo/Paris- The encounter between Romeo and Paris lends a certain emotional and dramatic ambiguity to the story; it is perhaps for this reason that the duel is often cut from film adaptations. This piece attempts to express that ambiguity. The first half of the composition is a representation of the surreal emotional fog that must have engulfed Romeo as he, exiled to a foreign land, learns of Juliet’s (supposed) death, and his dazed, robotic slog back to Verona. The second half of the piece evokes Romeo’s (and Paris’) midnight visit to the Capulet tomb. Just as the drama escalates inexorably toward confrontation, additive textures in the ensemble build slowly toward a climactic interaction between the two soloists. The piece concludes by reframing material from the additive textures as a diffuse, unresolving chorale. 8 Brass
