(Level III) This beautifully orchestrated composition serves as the introductory movement to a four episode jazz ballet entitled Mirrors. Traditional West African motives and Duke Ellington's influence predominate as the piece moves from a chant-like introduction into a smooth African 9/8 feel. RICHARD LAWN is the Founding Director of the Jazz Studies Program in the School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin. He holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Degrees from the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Rayburn Wright, Manny Album, Chuck Mangione and Bill Dobbins. Performance credits include extensive work with Lionel Hampton and Chuck Mangione. He has been awarded major grants as a jazz composer from the National Endowment for the Arts and his compositions are widely published by Kendor Music, C. L. Barnhouse and UNC Jazz Press among others. He performs regularly with the Nova Saxophone Quartet that has released four recordings on the Equilibrium, Crystal and Musical Heritage Society labels. Richard is co-aurthor of Jazz Theory and Practive (accompanied by interactive software) and author of The Jazz Ensembles Director's Manual.
