That Old Black Magic, by Kerry Marsh
This arrangement of the Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer standard was commissioned by Irving McArthur HS (TX) and has the kind of aggressive reharmonization and interesting groove ideas with accessible voice-leading for which Marsh has earned a reputation. The chart uses a mix of afro-cuban 6/8 feel and double-time swing. A vamping hook at the beginning, middle and end makes it memorable to your audience and a blast for the group. There is also plenty of solo space over newly composed minor changes that invite singers to improvise with greater ease; and backgrounds that bring on more intensity and excitement. This arrangement works equally well as an opener or closer for your set. SSATB with rhythm section.View all charts by Kerry Marsh

The Mad Hatter Rides Again, by Jeff Coffin arr.Deacon-Joyner
This is a favorite of Jeff’s and of everyone who hears it! It’s a very catchy melody that happens to be in 17 (or 8 ½ if you prefer). You’ll hum it the first time you hear it. It’s like Maceo Parker/James Brown but in an odd time signature with open solo space for any ensemble member. This is yet another burning chart by Dr. David Deacon-Joyner that is sure to bring the funk to the bandstand. Played on Jeff’s CD “Bloom” by Victor Wooten on bass and Derico Watson on drums, you KNOW it gots to be funky! View all charts by David Deacon-Joyner
