(Level IV) If you’re looking for a showpiece for the entire band that highlights the rhythm section, this arrangement should fit your needs. The melody is performed by those instruments least likely to be featured: bass, piano, and guitar play the A sections (assisted eventually by saxes) and the trombone section takes the bridge (you will need a strong lead trombone – 4th trumpet doubles the part if needed). After open solo sections for sax (any member of section), brass (trumpet or trombone), and the ensemble takes over with a variety of ideas including bebop quotes (Salt Peanuts), sax solis and tuttis. After a rhythm solo (bass, guitar or piano), a second shout chorus ensues. Both shout choruses include dynamic contrasts. 8 Brass

BRETT STAMPS has been the Director of Jazz Activities at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville since he initiated the Jazz Preformance Degree in 1979. He obtained his BA in Music from the College of William and Mary in 1970 and his MM in Studio Music and Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Miami in 1975. He currenly holds the rank of Professor of Music. Brett perfromed, recorded and arranged for the United States Army Field Band Jazz Ambassadors from 1970 to 1973, the Stan Kenton Orchestra from 1973 to 1974 and the University of Miami Concert Jazz Band from 1974 to 1978 before accepting a teaching position at Miami Dade Community College New World Center in 1978. St Louis area performance credits include the Jim Widner, Kim Portnoy, Mo Bottom and Gary Dammer Big Bands, The Fox Theater and MUNY Orchestras, the St. Loiuis Rivermen, Cornet Chop Suey, Legacy, Galaxy, The SIUE Jazz Faculty and various clinics, concerts, and recordings, most notably his new CD release, In Your Own Sweet Way released on Victoria Records. He currently directs the SIUE Concert jazz Band and teaches jazz combo, improvisation, arranging, trombone, education and history. Brett remains active as a composer, arranger and clinician. Past endeavors include directing Missouri and Illinois All State and All District Jazz Bands, presenting trombone master classes at USF, writing music commissioned by the IMEA, private individuals and local schools. Brett has also directed annual concerts of his original music at the historic Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, writing for trombone quintet, touring nationally with Cornet Chop Suey and the St, Louis Rivermen while also teaching and performing at Jim Widner Band Camps.
