(10 Brass) (Level 4) After an opening statement of the themes presented, a duet between the band and a drum solo, this chart settles down into a McCoy Tyner-like small group tune with John Coltrane changes on the bridge. As the tune develops, there are feature moments for all the sections in a fugue that leads to the solo section for trumpet and alto sax. A highlight of this piece is the very exciting trumpet section feature soli, where the entire trumpet section alternates fours with the rhythm section. STEVE WIEST received his undergraduate degree in jazz studies from the University of Southern Mississippi, after which he performed for four years as featured trombonist/composer/arranger with the Maynard Ferguson Band. Upon leaving Maynard, he went on to receive his Master of Music degree from North Texas State University, where he wrote for and played in the One O'Clock Lab Band. Steve has taught at the University of Texas at Arlington and is now Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.
