Description About the Composer

(8 Brass) (Level 4) Commissioned by Curt Hanrahan for the greater Milwaukee Youth Jazz Ensemble, this piece is written in a fusion style that combines straight ahead figures with a 1990's "hip hop" or "rap" groove in a similar style to the Brecker Brothers' recording, The Return of the Brecker Brothers. The main theme is stated by mixed choirs of saxophones and trumpets followed by a trumpet statement of the theme with a screaming lead guitar/saxophone counterline. After a bridge section the entire ensemble has a moment of improvisation over a specific group of notes. The solo section is open for any instrument (solo changes provided in all transpositions). The changes are in a modal style. After a soli/shout section, the piece ends with a surprise reprise of the introduction.
