The close, melting harmonies of this a cappella arrangement beautifully paint the lyrics and mood of Fred Coots' timeless ballad. Soprano and alto are in a warm and mellow low register for the majority of the tune, while tenor and bass have a light and airy quality to blend. Rhythmic notation should serve as a guideline only, as a very free interpretation of time is needed to bring out the intense imagery of the lyrics and the "bouquet" of the music. Perform this song when you want your listeners to leave hearing in their minds a "haunting refrain".

KIM COLLINS, a Kansas native, received a degree in music theory from the University of Kansas in 1978. Active in close harmony singing since childhood, he made jazz vocal arranging his emphasis starting in college. Kim has arranged and composed for numerous vocal groups both professional and amateur, and for his own ensembles at Santa Barbara City College where he is an instructor of vocal and instrumental jazz. Recently, the publisher, Four J's Music, chose his lyrics to accompany music by the late Harry Warren. Kim is currently the Director of Vocal Point, a 12-voice select ensemble that performs both public concerts and educational programs for southern California schools. He is also active on the local music scene as a performer on both bass and voice, composer, arranger, session player and singer, voice-over artist, teacher, clinician, consultant and church music director.
