(Level IV) Early One Spring by Joel Nagel is a multi-sectional piece that offers two distinct contrasting sections. The first section, a driving straight eighth feel, incorporates mixed meter and layers simple ostinato figures over one another creating a complex counterpoint.  This section calls for an aggressive trombone soloist that leads the band into a frenzy half-way through the piece.  The second section features an extended Alto Sax solo over simple yet lush harmonies.  A soaring melody emerges from the end of the solo and builds to a resounding climax.  Other written solos include Bass Clarinet (Bari Sax) and Bass.  Recorded on Thinking Globally, Acting Locally (University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band One) 9 Brass

Joel Nagel is an up-and-coming jazz composer, educator, and trombonist.  As a performer, Joel has received several awards including Winner of the Eastern Trombone Workshop's National Jazz Solo Competition, Finalist in the International Trombone Association's J.J. Johnson Competition, and a Downbeat Student Music Award as part of the Best College Small Group.
As a composer, Joel has been commissioned to write original works for both high school and university big bands and continues to work as a clinician at both levels.  His compositions have also earned accolades.  His piece, Almost Just About, received a Downbeat Student Music Award for Best Original Song.
Joel has earned a degree in Music Education from the University of Northern Iowa and a Master of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado.
