Clean Sheets, by Tyler Gilmore
(9 Brass) A straight-eights, modern big band chart that features trumpet and soprano sax on the melody and an open solo duet with tenor sax and drums. It develops by alternating from strongly contrasting light/modal sections and dark/atonal sections. This piece was premiered by UNC Lab I and will be on their upcoming CD release.

This piece is a melodic modal work in three with dense harmonies in the horn arrangement. It features a modern legato sound and would be a great opportunity for intermediate/advanced students to explore upper-structure harmonies in modal jazz. MLE would work well as a concert piece showing off an ensemble's ability to express lyricism and dynamics over modern harmonies. Flugelhorn, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Piano, Bass and Drums.

Piano Roll, by Tyler Gilmore


(Level V) Equal parts modern chamber music and big band composition, Piano Roll is the 2009 ASCAP/Columbia College Commission in Honor of Hank Jones, premiered by the Chicago Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Jon Faddis.  It was inspired by Hank Jones’ love of player pianos and features a unique take on  the piano roll styles that Mr. Jones grew up with.  The piece is an alto feature that begins softly and builds steadily to a forceful climax.  It is a difficult chart and requires a band with strong focused players in all seats, a sensitivity to complex orchestration, and a highly skilled drummer. Sax doubles. (8 Brass)

(Level IV) Sketching Restraint A minor-tinged medium-up swinger with modern jazz inflections and rock intensity, this chart was a winning entry in the 2009 ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award.  The piece is written to feature a trumpet soloist with strong range, but includes alternate feature parts for guitar or soprano saxophone that work equally as well.  It can be heard on The Ninth+Lincoln Orchestra’s debut CD.
