A Foggy Day, by Kerry Marsh
Try this great Gershwin tune as a songo! A Latin feel and some voicings reminiscent of the Hi-Lo's spice up this TTBB chart. An easy learn, this tune has solo space and a rousing finish. A good teaching tool for Latin rhythms and close harmony while still being a great addition to your vocal jazz program. TTBB with rhythm section.

Body and Soul, by Kerry Marsh
An arrangement of the standard ballad but with an up-tempo and slightly darker harmonic approach. This one is quite singable but it contains a few spots of dissonant and surprising harmony that are exciting and refresing to the listener. Almost all of the chords in the harmonic progression are substitutes for the original changes providing a brand new sonoric perspective on an old favorite. The solos are another surprise as they are not over a new set of changes that actually serve to transition into the head-out. A great ending makes this a winning closer! SATB with rhythm section.

Cheesehead, by Kerry Marsh
An arrangement of the Dave Glenn composition, played by the Little Big Band on the album Journeys. A contemporary and forward-looking approach to arranging for vocal jazz ensemble, this chart is laid out into two choirs and a rhythm section. The first choir sings mostly the melodic material and the second choir functions mostly as the background. The feel is an up-tempo, New York-style swing and functions very well in a program as an opener. Solo space with backgrounds. SSAATTBB with rhythm section.

Five After Never, by Kerry Marsh
An original composition, this chart uses wordless vocal in a slightly Metheny-esque manner to present themes. An a cappella introduction leads into a ECM-ish, floaty head with piano coloring the texture. The most prominent musical motif involves low voiced chords in the piano and eventually in the voices. A powerful and progressive work that fits on the program of any group searching for something out of the ordinary. SSATBB with rhythm.

Fly Me to the Moon, by Kerry Marsh
This is a hybrid approach to the classic standard. It pays homage to both the Astrud Gilberto recording and the Frank Sinatra/Count Basie Orchestra recording of the tune while still infusing some of the arranger's personal flavor. A swinging shout section follows a scat solo (or instrumental solo), and then a Sinatra sound-a-like takes over for a great finish! Commissioned by Long Beach Polytechnic High School. SATB with rhythm section.

Here to Stay, by Kerry Marsh
Commissioned by Oakland University (MI), this Pat Metheny Group tune from We Live Here opens with an a cappella statement, then an R & B groove with cool, laid-back feeling throughout. The chart contains TONS of solo space over makeable changes for singers and/or instrumentalists. SSATBaB with rhythm section.

His Eye is on the Sparrow, by Kerry Marsh
Commissioned by Valenica High School, this arrangement of the old hymn starts out simply as a rubato ballad with a soulful solo, but then adds vocal percussion in a jazz waltz groove. When the vocals come in after a short percussion break, it sounds highly reminiscent of a Take 6 tune with quickly moving harmonies, lots of great dominant sounds and exciting hits in the background vocals. This will surely be a crowd pleaser and a fun and challenging chart to sing. SATB a cappella.

Impressions, by Kerry Marsh

This hard-hitting closer was a Down Beat Magazine Winner for Best College Jazz Arrangement in 2003. It uses many compositional devices borrowed from various contemporary jazz sources, but most prominently features a funk setting and a drastic reharmonization of the modal classic by John Coltrane. The solo form is extended giving each soloist one tonal environment with which to work. The solos become part of the composition, bringing the dynamic level down with a bass solo and then the singers slowly build up the intensity into a swinging funk soli section then closing with the melody and a stretched out ending, meant to get your audience out of their chairs. This arrangement served as the closer for the UNT Jazz Singers 2003 IAJE peformance in Toronto, Canada. SSATBaB with rhythm.

In This time, by Kerry Marsh
An ethereal, ECM-flavored chart paying homage to the wonders of the cosmos and the mind. A colorful and original harmonic environment will create a sense of awe and excitement. This is an entirely singable chart that fits well in the "something different"category of your program, and will leave people talking. SATB with rhythm.

Into Wishin', by Kerry Marsh
This original composition is a forward-looking and introspective chart based around the idea of losing a lover with no notice. The title is a play on words, of course, and has a double meaning found in the text. The musical concept is long sustained chords in the vocals with a driving force from the rhythm section. Contains a very open section for an adventurous scat solo. The form is odd on this one too which is part of the theme of unpredictability. This is a good chart to pull out if your program has way too much happy music. SSATB with rhythm.

Journeys, by Kerry Marsh
Another Dave Glenn composition for his "Little Big Band," arranged by Marsh for voices. This chart is performed on wordless vocal, and is in a medium-up tempo, straight-eighth note, contemporary feel. Backgrounds underneath the solo give support in a building contour, releasing the tension just before the head comes back in. A nice tough by Glenn employed as well by the arranger. SATBaB with rhythm section.

Just a Gigalo, by Kerry Marsh
Commissioned by Long Beach (CA) Polytechnic High School, this is a fun chart to use for a men's section feature. A fairly simple chart, it's mostly derived from Louis Prima's original recording of the song. A tenor soloist is featured in the Prima role, and should be willing to put on a show! TTBB with rhythm section plus trombone and trumpet.

Little Sunflower, by Kerry Marsh
A Freddie Hubbard composition that is a very challenging chart and will push even experienced groups. Commissioned by Folsom High School, this version is based closely on the big band arrangement performed by the Airmen of Note. There are some moments in this chart that are fairly mind-boggling, and a well-rehearsed live performance of it is absolutely sure to impress an audience. The feel is largely a 12/8 funk groove over which the ensemble floats the gorgeous melody. Lots of solo space, including a straight-ahead swing section. Soli section, backgrounds and an interesting ending. This chart has it all! SSAATBab with rhythm section.

Mas Alla, by Kerry Marsh

This arrangement of the Pat Metheny ballad from First Circle features a tenor soloist. The wonderful Spanish lyric was written by Pedro Aznar. Some thick and challenging harmony, but an attainable and worthwhile chart for most college vocal jazz groups. One of Metheny's greatest melodic compositions. SATBB a cappella

Midnight Voyage, by Kerry Marsh
Arranged for the Sacramento State Jazz Singers, this version of the Joey Calderazzo tune features a vocalese on Michael Brecker's great solo from the Tales from the Hudson recording. This is a challenging chart from many angles, and you'll need a strong tenor soloist for the vocalese. The bulk of the work for th ensemble is background singing, but these backgrounds are developed and intricate, creating a moody, dark and tense vibe throughout against a medium swing.
