A Firm Grasp of the Obvious, by Eric Richards
(9 Brass) (Level 5) This piece was commissioned by the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Studies Program for the 1999 UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival. It is a contemporary concert piece generally built over a "floating" 2 feel. The piece features tenor saxophone, piano and a cappella (i.e. no rhythm section) solis for all winds and the saxophone sections. Alto Saxophone lead/Alto II (optional Flute) and Bari Saxophone (optional Bass Clarinet). Optional saxophone parts available without doubles.

A View from the Edge, by Eric Richards
(8 Brass, Optional 9 Brass) (Level 4) A View from the Edge was commissioned by Gene Aitken and the 1999/2000 University of Northern Colorado Jazz Lab Band I. It was written specially for their appearance at the annual convention of the International Association of Jazz Educators in New Orleans in January 2000. A View... is an exciting piece that alternates between a mambo groove and a straight-ahead feel. Featured soloists are Alto Saxophone I and/or Trumpet IV and/or Guitar and/or Keyboard. There is space for an extended drum set and optional Latin percussion soli. No woodwind doubles.

Alice In Wonderland, by Eric Richards
(9 Brass) (Level 4) This concert piece was originally written for MSG Bobby Smith of the Army Blues in Washington, D.C. It has since been performed by the USAF Airmen of Note, the Army Jazz Ambassadors, the University of North Florida and other professional and university level ensembles. It opens with a rubato solo piano statement of the melody which progresses into a post-bop swing feel. After two choruses of solo piano, the brass section plays an a cappella soli in the style of Rob McConnell.

(8-9 Brass) (Level 3) This jazz standard has been re-cast as a relaxed modal swing trombone feature. The harmonic language and scoring approach creates a rich orchestral palette for the soloist and rhythm section to "float" on top of. No doubles (soprano sax lead).

Blues for a Bad Hair Day, by Eric Richards
(9 Brass) (Level 4) This "tongue-in-cheek", rompin' blues caricature is a lot of fun! It features "crunch" guitar, baritone sax and trombone on the head with lots of solo space for all likely suspects. Courante Picante, by Eric Richards
(9 Brass) (Level 3) This exciting Latin funk chart was commissioned by the award winning Hall High School Concert Jazz Band of West Hartford, Connecticut. It alternates between Latin funk and samba grooves and features tenor saxophone and electric bass solos. There is an optional piccolo/flute double on the soprano saxophone 1 part which is not critical to performance. Courante Picante is well within the reach of good high school and college groups and would be a great choice for concerts or festivals!

Doxy, by Eric Richards
(8-9 Brass) (Level 4) This medium straight ahead chart on Sonny Rollins' famous "set-closer" features bass trombone. The melody is stated in a frontline of piccolo (opt. flute), harmon trumpet, bass clarinet, and bass trombone. There is an extended jazz solo section for bass trombone and/or piccolo (opt. flute). Doxy is a refreshing change of pace that features a sometimes neglected instrument. Tenor IV doubles on piccolo or flute, Bari V doubles on bass clarinet.

El Viaje Adelante (The Journey Ahead), by Eric Richards

(8 Brass, Trumpet/Flugelhorn 5 opt.) Commisioned by Gene Aitken for the 2004 UNC/Greeley Jazz Festival All Star Big Band. This exciting composition is a high energy Latin chart that features tenor saxophone, trumpet and drums/percussion. It is written at the advanced level and is ideal for concert and festival performance. Soprano saxophone lead. Doubles: None/optional (non-critical) piccolo double in alto II.

Ellesamba, by Eric Richards
(8 Brass) (Level 4) Optional 9 Brass. A beautiful,"floating" samba written for the composer's wife. Ellesamba features a frontline of soprano saxophone, optional flute (Tenor III), and flugelhorn. The piece opens with a lush brass chorale which leads into the relaxed samba feel. The development section of the chart features a saxophone section soli which builds into an exciting ensemble soli. Tenor Saxophone III optinally doubles on flute, but the double is not critical to performance. Trumpets double on flugelhorns.
