A Minor Excursion, by David Caffey

(8 brass) This swinging chart is especially fun for the trombone section!  There are several good melodic lines for the trombones including a chorus of minor blues in the middle where they carry the main melody in an a cappella setting. Yes, it’s exposed, but very playable and rewarding for the performers.  Solos are for piano and tenor sax.

Blizzard Bop, by David Caffey

(8 Brass) Straight-ahead bebop with a challenging unison line for soprano, tenor, trumpet and trombone. Changes are based on the readily accessible changes of Ladybird. Featured soloists are tenor and soprano sax with space for others possible. The most fun in this chart is the section where the saxes and brass trade 16s, 8s, 4s, and 2s. This is impressive festival material! Recorded by the Cal State L.A. Jazz Ensemble on We're Back!

Blue 16, by David Caffey
(8 Brass) A 16-bar minor blues form is where this chart gets its name. The soloist featured is the guitarist, but it could be passed to other players as well. With several straight-ahead big band shouts and a contrapuntal treatment of the theme statement, this chart has a lot to offer the band. Especially rewarding is a virtuoso soli for flugelhorn, alto, tenor, bari and trombone. Written for 4 trumpets and 4 trombones. There is one double - flute on the 2nd tenor part (a melody part which could be optional).

Both Sides Of The Coin, by David Caffey

(8 Brass) Originally recorded by Steps Ahead, this tune is arranged for big band featuring solos by tenor I, trumpet III and drums. This chart will present a challenge for the brass section, but if the players are advanced, the results will be rewarding. Also, the saxes double on flute. The feel moves back and forth between Latin/rock and samba. Exciting concert material! Recorded on UNC's Alive XI.

Carnival In Vera Cruz, by David Caffey
(10 Brass) This chart is a winner. Starting with marimbas playing a mournful rubato introduction, the tenor saxophone cadenza is introduced over the continuing marimba background. A mesmerizing Latin beat is launched and the tenor sax begins soloing on simple changes. After a brief brass chorale, the tune takes off at quarter note = 120 samba and never lets up. The flute doubles are technically demanding and the trumpet parts are high (though most always in octaves).

Only Forever, by David Caffey

(8 Brass) Written originally for UNC Jazz Lab Band I, this musical ballad features alto saxophone soloist throughout. The original feel changes to a listesso-tempo funk feel in the middle of the chart with accessible changes for the soloist and is followed by a return to the lush ballad for the ending. The highest written note for the lead trumpet is a high F, but this is in a passage written in octaves for the trumpets so the part can be lowered an octave. Recorded on UNC's Alive, 1989!
