A Final Glimpse, by Chuck Owen
(Level 3) A light and simple bossa ballad that is intended as nothing more than a very pretty piece of music. This arrangement, originally written for Bill Watrous, is an excellent feature number for the lead trombonist in your band. Alto I and II, Tenor I - sop./clar., Tenor II - Flute, Bari - Fl/Clar.

A Glimmer Of Hope, by Chuck Owen
(8 Brass) (Level 3) A uniquely scored a cappella wind soli opens this pensive bossa nova as the rhythm section announces the entrance of the featured soloist, the lead trombone. This lyrical melody provides any trombonist with a wonderful opportunity to display a warm, lush sound and control of the upper register. The piece is a charming, sentimental, understated and occasionally melancholy portrait but one that always retains a glimmer of hope. Recorded on Sea Breeze CD, Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge. Alto I & II - Flute; Tenor I & II - Clarinet; Bar - Bass Clarinet; Trumpet II & IV - Flugel.

A Quiet Longing (new Version), by Chuck Owen
(8 Brass) (Level 3) Chuck's beautiful ballad has been an audience and musician's favorite for many years which has, in turn, resulted in several settings, including a previous big band arrangement. This latest 1995 version is the one recorded on Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge, and is a stunning, quasi-orchestral setting of the soprano sax feature. An initial brass chorale contrasts sharply with the soprano's stark entrance, but returns for the lusly romantic climax and introspective coda. Also features a solo for piano. Woodwinds must double.

Alladin, by Chuck Owen
(8 Brass) (Level 3) At last! A big band chart that features the bass player. Starting in a somewhat "spacey" manner, the piece develops into a light, easy swing groove. There's a delightful section that has the brass trading with the woodwinds and a shout chorus that swings and swings. Solos for bass, soprano and flute. Alto I - sp./fl; Alto II - alto Flute (opt.); Tenor I - Flute; Tenor II - Clarinet; Bari - Bass Clarinet.

Beautiful Love, by Chuck Owen

(8 Brass) (Level 4) Commissioned originally by the Band of U.S. Air Force Reserve Jazz Ensemble and recorded by the Jazz Surge on their CD, Madcap, Chuck has given this lovely standard an evocatively sensual portrayal. After allowing woodwinds and muted brass to establish the ECMish groove, Alto Sax and Trombone lazily unveil the head and are later featured in extended solos (Bass also has a solo). The piece settles into a groove that is probably best described as a slow rhumba and climaxes with a stirring, brassy statement of the melody. Lots of woodwind doubles including an Alto Flute (gasp!) part. 5,4,4,PBGD, opt. Perc, Opt. Solo Alto.

Blues on Down, by Chuck Owen

(8 Brass) This great Benny Golson blues is placed in a classic, buoyant, Basie/Quincy setting. Recorded by Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge there are solos for trumpet and tenor (orginally Benny and the late Nat Adderley) before the piece gives way to the infectious jazz march groove Benny is noted for (initially provide by an a cappella sax section!). A good 'ol swingin' shout takes us back to the understated head. The chart includes a bass solo and flute lead (written in the Tenor 1 part) but remains one of Chuck's most accessible charts for school bands.

But Beautiful, by Chuck Owen
But Beautiful - Another standard bites the dust! This one features some "meaty" changes and a groove that alternates between hip-hop and straight-ahead swing. Trumpet and guitar (piano can substitute) are prominently featured throughout before the powerful tuttie recap leads us into a very funky ending with soloists blazing! Guitar also get to show his/her sensitive side with a rubato into to their solo. Recorded by the Jazz Surge on "Madcap" and commissioned originally by the Band of the U.S. Airforce Reserve Jazz Ensemble. Lead Alto plays soprano. All other woodwinds double. (8 Brass, Opt. Perc.)

Flight Of The Apteryx, by Chuck Owen
(8 Brass) (Level 3) This piece presents an entirely new problem for horn players--how to play disco/funk with their tongues in their cheeks. This light parody will serve as a delightful change of pace and crowd pleaser. Solos for alto, trombone and guitar with brief percussion solo. Alto II - sop.

Foaming At The Chops, by Chuck Owen
(8 Brass) (Level 4) This scorching double-time blues was originally written for the Tonight Show Orchestra to feature Doc and Pete Christlieb, so there is plenty of solo space for the trumpet and tenor sax. The tempo is brutally fast and there is an absolutely inhuman modulation at the end of the chart (in other words, this chart has earned its title), but if you have some horses, this chart will close your concert and leave them buzzing. No doubles.

Funk And Games, by Chuck Owen

Here And Gone, Today And Tomorrow, by Chuck Owen
(8 Brass) (Level 3) There seems to be some confusion as to whether this Basie-styled swing chart is an absolute barn-burner or a hard swinging half-time blues. After several exchanges, however, all is straightened out--or is it? Solos for trombone, alto and tenor. No doubles.

Kites, by Chuck Owen
(8 Brass) (Level 3) All the images and adjectives commonly associated with kites (peaceful, colorful, playful, etc.) could be used to describe this lovely contemporary ballad. An ethereal opening section featuring the pianist leads gently to a simple statement of the folk-like melody by the soprano sax. Understatement remains the key word throughout. This piece rises elegantly to its climax before floating back to earth. If you are an ECM fan, you will delight in this piece. WWI - Sop; WWI - Alto/Fl; WW III - Clar; WWIV - Fl; WW V - Bass Clar; Tpt IV - Flugel.

Moleids, by Chuck Owen
(8 Brass) (Level 4) Wild, powerful and occasionally off-the-wall, this piece provides a Weather Report-like setting for some unusual and very effective scoring. The trumpet and tenor sax have plenty of opportunity to get "out there" over a churning swing solo section before the final "out" chorus simply blows everyone away. Alto I - Sop/Fl; Alto II - Fl/Picc; Tenor I - Fl; Tenor II & Bari - Fl.
