Atlas of Epicurus, by Kevin Brunkhorst
This uses sixteenth-note funk rhythms and quickly moving harmonies. The bass part, where written out, provides the sixth note in many chords. the chord changes for the solos are not too difficult but htey are assembles in unusual ways. Also, there are several time changes within the main melody, providing a challenge to the rhythm section. There are two solo sections. Level: Difficult

Rock the Boat, by Deke Sharon
One of the most infectiously catchy pop/R & B songs to come out of the 70's (made popular by "The Hues Corporation"), this arrangement will make your singers want to get up and dance. Very melodic background lines, plenty of syncopation. Vocal percussion optional. TTBB a cappella.

East St. Louis Whipping Post, by Kevin Brunkhorst

This chart takes elements from Duke Ellington's East St. Louis Toodle-Oo and the Allman Brothers' Whipping Post and creates the written-out effect of the modern "mash-up". There are direct metric juxtapositions (not modulations), but the overall pulse remains consistent. Consistent with Southern Rock style, there are two open sections in which two guitars solo simultaneously; rhythm sections are encouraged to change their approaches to each section. There are extremes of range in most parts--the lead guitar part goes to doulbe high D at the 22nd fret. This chart is difficult but is a proven crowd dazzler.

To You, by Sharon Broadley
(Level 3) This chart lies closer to the pop side of music. Sounding very much like an Anita Baker crossover tune, it is meant to feature a male or female solo vocalist with three-and four-part vocal backgrounds. SATB with rhythm section.

You Should Know Better, by Sharon Broadley
(Level 3) This allows sopranos and altos to "rock out" in gutsy unison. Male voices play more of a supporting role. The "hook" of the piece is in four-part harmony and challenges the sense of time of any group as they must relax repeated quarter note, on-the-beat phrases over and over again. Not the easiest crossover tune. The challenge of simplicity can be deceiving. This chart also includes three-horn type vocal filler licks a la Chicago. SATB with rhythm section.

What Can I Say?, by Gary Fry
(Level 2) Got thirty seconds? Then you've got time for this novelty number. Slick, sophisticated pop with tight harmonies, this is a fun way to comment on our "fast-food, instant-gratification" society. Though fairly difficult, its very short length alleviates the struggle for mastery and may provide a steppping-stone to more difficult longer pieces. SSAATTBB with rhythm.
