Partin' Shots - (Level V) Blues, quarter note = 112. Commissioned by the Rob Parton JazzTech Big Band for its debut compact disk (Sea Breeze SB CD-112), this Monk-ish blues begins with open piano and bass solos. Flute and muted trumpet carry the tune over a two-feel, repeated by the trombones as the ensemble answers. A four-voice trumpet soli swings into an open trombone solo. Backgrounds build to a shout, the piano recaps the quirky melody, and the band tags it to end. If you've got the players, this chart will excite the blues groove of your band. Alto I doubles on flute. 8 Brass

Hang Time - (Level V) Get your trombone section to "hang out" in the practice room on this five-bone section feature. The trombones deliver the tune in harmony, play a brief soli, and the band sends off the soloists. Fourth trombone solos over G and Gm blues, third over G blues. Fifth trombone plays a "walking bass" written solo line under an A blues woodwind soli, then the first and second trombones trade fours over an A minor and G blues. The band briefly recaps, and the trombones close the tune with flair. Alto I doubles flute; Alto II and Tenors double clarinet; Bari doubles Bass Clarinet. An optional trumpet part extends the range to A6. 9 Brass

(Level III) Bones At The Ready Composed for and premiered by the 2010 International Trombone Festival Jazz Choir, members ages 20 to 80. A Bb swing blues, playable by as few as four performers or as a larger choir. Everyone gets a piece of the melody at some point. Lead part rises only to Ab above the staff. The provided drum set part is optional. Solo space is provided for each chair; but the chart performs wonderfully even if no one solos, as the stop-times and riffs make for excellent passages on their own. It can easily be opened up for additional soloists, including non-trombone guests. Works as an opener or closer. This composition is dedicated to my older brother, José, who played trombone in high school and was a great example of musical interest, passion, dedication, hard work, and enjoyment. (8 Brass) A 16-bar minor blues form is where this chart gets its name. The soloist featured is the guitarist, but it could be passed to other players as well. Especially rewarding is a virtuoso soli for flugelhorn, alto, tenor, bari and trombone. Written for 4 trumpets and 4 trombones. There is one double - flute on the 2nd tenor part (a melody part which could be optional).

Henhouse, by Bruce Wermuth Blues for Twister, by Gregg Akkerman Blue 16, by David Caffey
Blue 16, by David Caffey
Our Price: $65.00
(Level III) Medium tempo, swinging blues in C with a bridge after intro (which includes trumpets crowing, then "clucking" with plunger mutes), catchy riff-like melody is stated in saxes, with written piano (could be ad-lib answers for more experienced players), then brass responses--leading to a center solo section. Changes are printed in tenor 1, trombone 2, and trumpet 2, with cued notes in each part to be played if not soloing. Driving thematic tutti writing provides a good opportunity to develop swing ensemble playing. A subsequent breakdown section provides another solo opportunity (changes provided in trumpet 2 and piano, with "clucking" and "fluttering" brass and sax background figures respectively), into a solo drum break and building to a big finish. Designed to knock the barn doors down among poultry frivolity. Sample piano comp voicing in the solo section and a written bass line throughout make this piece suitable for high school and college bands with less experienced rhythm sections as well as more advanced groups wanting a fun piece that swings hard. 8 Brass

There are solo changes in all the parts and the rhythm section parts have lots of written notes as well as chord symbols to accommodate various skill levels.

(Level V) This is what you get when you mix blues with a Latin feel. The fast waltz begins and ends in 4/4, yet feels just right. Trombone and trumpet play the line in octaves. Two choruses of ensemble build to a rhythmically exciting kick off to the trombone solo. The ensemble returns as a transition to the trumpet solo. The band metrically modulates to a slower 4/4 as a change of pace from the fast 3/4 and shifts back to the fast waltz in the middle of the trumpet solo. Then, the band overlaps the last trumpet solo and returns to the original theme. The two soloists trade eights at the end before a climax in 4/4. A final chord is like an afterglow, hangover heat remaining after the burning chart. 8 Brass
