Overture - Miami Suite Movement I, by Christopher Jentsch
(8 Brass) This brief movement serves as an introduction to the Suite as a whole. It is a short brass chorale that references thematic material from all of the other movements. It concludes with an inverted diminished cross-rhythm texture which sets up the flugel solo at the start of Movement II. All trumpets double on flugelhorn. Reed I plays soprano sax throughout. Recorded by the University of Miami's Concert Jazz Band on Jentsch's Miami Suite CD.

Epilogue - Miami Suite Movement V, by Christopher Jentsch
(8 Brass) Epilogue takes the peak of the Media Event ending and calms the mood to prepare for the Suite ending. This brief movement recalls The Ballad... second movement closely but ties up the Suite with references to all of the other movements. Reed II plays soprano sax throughout and soprano voice is back in. No other doubles. Recorded by the University of Miami's Concert Jazz Band on Jentsch's Miami Suite CD.

Light Sleep, by Alan D. Neveu
(4 Brass, 3 Sax) As the name suggests, this is a slow, delicate tune. The harmonies, melodies and texures are very adventuresome and are intended to create the feeling of taking a nap in bright sunshine. Most of the piece is in a slow 5/4 meter and the counting is a bit tricky. Woodwind doubles: Reed 1 (clarinet/soprano sax); Reed 2 (clarinet/tenor sax); Reed 3 (bass clarinet/bari sax); trumpets double on flugelhorn.

A Glimmer Of Hope, by Chuck Owen
(8 Brass) (Level 3) A uniquely scored a cappella wind soli opens this pensive bossa nova as the rhythm section announces the entrance of the featured soloist, the lead trombone. This lyrical melody provides any trombonist with a wonderful opportunity to display a warm, lush sound and control of the upper register. The piece is a charming, sentimental, understated and occasionally melancholy portrait but one that always retains a glimmer of hope. Recorded on Sea Breeze CD, Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge. Alto I & II - Flute; Tenor I & II - Clarinet; Bar - Bass Clarinet; Trumpet II & IV - Flugel.

Alladin, by Chuck Owen
(8 Brass) (Level 3) At last! A big band chart that features the bass player. Starting in a somewhat "spacey" manner, the piece develops into a light, easy swing groove. There's a delightful section that has the brass trading with the woodwinds and a shout chorus that swings and swings. Solos for bass, soprano and flute. Alto I - sp./fl; Alto II - alto Flute (opt.); Tenor I - Flute; Tenor II - Clarinet; Bari - Bass Clarinet.

The Heritage, by Chuck Owen
(10 Brass) (Level 3) Some classical flavors are present in this emotionally charged composition. The simple, lyrical flute opening quickly becomes a driving Latin 3/4 beat. A soprano sax solo leads to the upbeat and triumphant ending. Alto I - Sop/Fl; Tenor II - Fl; Bari - Fl/Picc.

Kites, by Chuck Owen
(8 Brass) (Level 3) All the images and adjectives commonly associated with kites (peaceful, colorful, playful, etc.) could be used to describe this lovely contemporary ballad. An ethereal opening section featuring the pianist leads gently to a simple statement of the folk-like melody by the soprano sax. Understatement remains the key word throughout. This piece rises elegantly to its climax before floating back to earth. If you are an ECM fan, you will delight in this piece. WWI - Sop; WWI - Alto/Fl; WW III - Clar; WWIV - Fl; WW V - Bass Clar; Tpt IV - Flugel.
