Use All Of Your Senses, by Christine Rosander/Wendell Kelly
(Level 3) This is a salsa a cappella original, starting with an imitative percussion introduction. The montuno bass line, with wood block sung simultaneously by the bass, is the groove for the hot salsa, funk style. The verses are filled with rich, romantic harmonies which surround this alto feature. This one is hot, challenging and will dazzle any audience. SATB a cappella.

For The Beauty Of The Earth, by Brad Rees
(Level 4) Taken from two movements of Paul Winter's Mass for the Earth, this arrangement is a unique "world music" feature for any vocal jazz or contemporary a cappella ensemble. It opens with a lush harmonization of a traditional plainsong melody, then quickly changes to Native American chant over an Afro-Brazilian vocalese groove. Recorded by UNC's Et Cetera on Hot XII. SSATB a cappella with vocal percussion and optional unison chorus.

The Goombay Smash, by Steve Owen

(8 Brass) (Level 4) Commissioned by the Lackland Air Force Base Dimensions in Blue; jazz ensemble. Latin at its best, this chart falls into an authentic Cuban songo feel that grooves from top to bottom. Written to feature alto and trombone (\optional trumpet), there is extensive solo space for both over great chord changes. A final montuno builds and builds to a sizzling shout and an electrifying ending. No doubles. Critical percussion part. Recorded on UNC's Alive X CD.

Both Of Them, by Will Campbell
(Level IV) Both of Them is an exciting chart that features solos for lead alto, piano, and drums in an Afro Cuban feel. Following a slow introduction involving metric change, the 12/8 feel is established by bass and baritone saxophone. There is a brief interlude between solos, and a shout chorus after the alto solo that features horns and drums. A saxophone soli is followed by an open drum solo. A great concert closer. (8 Brass)

That Old Black Magic, by Kerry Marsh

This arrangement of the Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer standard was commissioned by Irving McArthur HS (TX) and has the kind of aggressive reharmonization and interesting groove ideas with accessible voice-leading for which Marsh has earned a reputation. The chart uses a mix of afro-cuban 6/8 feel and double-time swing. A vamping hook at the beginning, middle and end makes it memorable to your audience and a blast for the group. There is also plenty of solo space over newly composed minor changes that invite singers to improvise with greater ease; and backgrounds that bring on more intensity and excitement. This arrangement works equally well as an opener or closer for your set. SSATB with rhythm section.

Just Missed You, by Kevin Brunkhorst
(Level IV) Jazz Nonet. Just Missed You uses the Latin ‘tombao’ rhythm.  In keeping with the Cuban style, additional percussionists could be easily added.  The melody is shared by alto and trumpet.  The first phrase of the melody is seven bars, and this unevenness gives it a sense of ‘leaning forward’, especially in the tenor solo section.  Cadences are built around a iv-V-bII formula.  Articulations should always favor the offbeats, and the horns sound better if they ‘lay back’.  The piano solo before the DS may be opened up. (trumpet, trombone; baritone, tenor, and alto saxes; guitar, piano, bass, drums)

Sierra Nevada, by Mike Bogle
(10 Brass) (Level 5) Commissioned by the Weatherford College jazz band, Weatherford, TX, and commemorating the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band's spring tour to the Reno Jazz Festival in 1994, this is a great Latin chart with a songo/salsa groove. It plays down easily and includes solos for trombone (or trumpet), tenor sax, drums, and optional Latin percussion. Easy, galloping, songo feel will have people dancing in the aisles if it's in their blood. Excellent opportunity for percussionists to stretch out on timbales or congas, but also works well with drumset only.
